Application of liposome technology in functional skincare products

Time: 2026-03-14 Source: Author:

How does it make skincare products more effective?

  • Enhanced Penetration: The phospholipid bilayer structure of liposomes is highly similar to that of skin cell membranes, allowing them to easily integrate and penetrate the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum. This enables the efficient delivery of normally difficult-to-penetrate ingredients (such as Vitamin C and ellagic acid) to the dermis, transporting them from the epidermis to the deeper layers of the skin to exert their effects.
  • Slow-Release: Liposomes act like tiny "warehouses," slowly releasing encapsulated active ingredients within the skin under specific timeframes or conditions. For example, one study showed that liposome-encapsulated active ingredients can be slowly released into the deeper layers of the skin over 72 hours. This not only prolongs the duration of action but also avoids the instantaneous irritation caused by high concentrations of active ingredients.
  • High Stability: Many excellent skincare ingredients (such as Vitamin C, retinol, and resveratrol) are highly unstable and easily decompose or oxidize upon exposure to light. The vesicle structure of liposomes provides a protective shell for these fragile ingredients, isolating them from the external environment and significantly improving product stability and shelf life.

What effects have been confirmed?

Research Ingredients Main Efficacy Research Results
Vitamin C Derivative (EAA) Anti-photoaging Liposome encapsulation significantly increases retention in the skin and effectively reduces UV-induced extracellular matrix degradation.
Ellagic Acid Anti-aging Liposomes modified with hyaluronic acid of a specific molecular weight maximize ellagic acid delivery to the dermis, significantly enhancing its anti-photoaging effect.
Phytophthol-1-phosphate (PhS1P) Anti-aging Nanoliposome products containing this ingredient showed a 31.57% increase in skin elasticity and a 17.67% increase in skin thickness after 8 weeks of use.
Pterostilbene Whitening and anti-wrinkle Liposome encapsulation increases skin retention by 1.7 times, improving dullness and sensitivity within 14 days.
Tocopherol phosphate Moisturizing and wound healing The liposome formula effectively enhances skin hydration and significantly promotes fibroblast migration, accelerating wound closure.

Key Truths:

  • Protecting Fragile Ingredients: Ingredients like Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and retinol (vitamin A), which are highly susceptible to oxidation or photodegradation, are encapsulated in a liposome bilayer, acting like "bulletproof vests" and significantly prolonging their activity.
  • Reducing Irritation: Sustained-release technology is a major contributor to liposomes. For example, with retinol, liposome encapsulation allows for controlled release, reducing the instantaneous impact on the epidermis and thus lowering the risk of peeling and redness.
  • Mimizing the Skin Barrier: The structure of liposomes is remarkably similar to the lipids between human cell membranes and the stratum corneum of the skin (the main component is usually lecithin). While delivering ingredients, they also repair damaged barriers themselves.
